Why the 24-Hour Urine Collection?

The 24-hour urine collection is a valuable diagnostic tool that helps us monitor certain aspects of your health during pregnancy. It provides a comprehensive look at various markers that help us assess kidney function and detect any potential issues early on.

Getting Started: The First Void and Start Time

The process begins with the "first void," which is the first time you empty your bladder in the morning. Although this initial urine is discarded,—it serves as the starting point for your 24-hour collection. Note the time when you discard this sample as your official start time. This will be your reference point for the next 24 hours.

Collecting Throughout the Day: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Labeling the Container: You will be provided with a clean hat and a container for collecting your urine. Label it with your name, date of birth, and the start time.

2. Collection Throughout the Day: Every time you empty your bladder after the first void, collect the urine in the hat provided and then pour into the labeled container. Make sure to include all urine throughout the day and night.

3. Refrigeration or Keeping Cool: To maintain the integrity of the specimen, it's crucial to keep the container refrigerated or continually cool throughout the 24-hour period. If refrigeration is not possible, keeping the jar in an ice bucket will suffice.

4. End Time: Exactly 24 hours after your start time, if you can void, collect your final urine sample, otherwise, stop the collection. This marks the end of the collection period.

5. Take Specimen to the Laboratory: Once the 24-hour period is complete, take your specimen to a Quest laboratory near you. Don't forget to bring the order sheet your provider provided.

Tips for a Smooth Collection Day

• Plan for a Home Day: Given the nature of the collection, it's advisable to plan for a day when you can be at home for the most part. This minimizes the chances of interruptions and ensures a more accurate collection.

• Short Trips After Voiding: If you do need to step out, try to plan short trips immediately after voiding to minimize the impact on the 24-hour collection.
