Service Description

Cesarean rates are higher for women who labor in hospitals than for women who labor in a birth centers or home. Staying at home as long as you can during the early part of labor makes it easier for you to relax between contractions, move freely, and eat and drink as you choose. Delaying hospital arrival until you are having strong, regular contractions can help increase your chances of a vaginal birth. Monitrice services are the perfect solution for families planning a hospital birth, who wish to maximize their chances of a successful vaginal birth by remaining at home during early active labor. I offer you labor support through comfort measures and emotional support while monitoring your labor progress until you are ready to go into the hospital in active labor. I will take your vital signs, listen to baby's heart and assess labor progress through cervical exams as needed or desired, in the comfort of your home. As you progress in labor, we'll decide on the right time to head into the hospital and if allowed more than one visitor, I will continue supporting you and your family in a doula role for up to 12 hours or until after baby arrives. Families may want to hire a monitrice with special circumstances, such as planning a vaginal birth after a cesarean or if there has been previous birth trauma. As a Monitrice, I will not be your primary pregnancy or birth care provider. I will not be providing prenatal, home birth, postpartum or newborn care in the same manner as I would if I was your Midwife. I will not catch your baby; and once you are admitted to the hospital, my role will shift to that of birth doula. Your care provider can be made aware that you are planning to use a monitrice in labor, before entering the hospital, and I am happy to talk directly with them, or accompany you to an appointment, to explain my role, and expertise.
